Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura

Background

Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP) is a rare condition which is identified by five key features:

  • a low platelet count
  • microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia (fragmentation and destruction of the red blood cells as they flow through partially obstructed blood vessels)
  • fluctuating neurological features (which may include headaches, unusual behaviour, fits, sensory abnormalities and reduced consciousness)
  • impairment of kidney function
  • and fever
