Sydenham Chorea

Background

Sydenham Chorea usually follows infection with the Streptococcus bacterium. It classically follows a bout of tonsillitis and forms part of the spectrum of Rheumatic fever. The true incidence is not known and most cases seen in the UK occur sporadically, but clusters or epidemics can occur. Girls are slightly often more affected in the adolescent age range.
