Brain Injuries
How is it treated?
An injury to the brain produces changes in the patient which can be assessed to determine the severity of the injury. This enables the doctors who initially look after such a patient to determine where the patient would be best managed, either on a general ward or at a specific neurosurgical centre. Occasionally, when injuries are severe, operations are required and sometimes management on an intensive care unit is required. However, by far the majority of head injuries that most people have sustained can be managed either by simple advice from the accident and emergency department, the person being released into the care of a responsible adult, or by overnight observation in a general ward.
If long term problems result and depending on the severity , specialist care may be required in dedicated rehabilitation centres to bring about the best possible result. The effect on families can be devastating, as the injured person is often never the same as they were prior to the injury.
