If your child is newly diagnosed, you may like to start with our guide for parents 'When your child has additional needs', which will give you an overview of provision throughout the UK. If you need medical information about your child's condition our Directory of Conditions should be able to help. This will also tell you about national support groups for various medical conditions, including very rare disorders. If you cannot find your child's condition listed here, do contact our helpline - we have information about many hundreds of other conditions, which are not yet in our Directory. The factsheets section contains a wealth of useful factual information about your rights in relation to benefits, help from social services, special educational needs and much more. These cover the topics parents most often ask us about. There is also information about dealing with the emotional aspects of having a disabled child. Our helpline also has a frequently asked questions page which may also answer some queries. If you would prefer to have information on tape or in another language, we have some translated publications. You may find it helpful to chat with other parents. Our contact other parents section tells you more about the ways you can get in touch with other families. This might be face to face in a local group or by phoning a national support group. We also run the website http://www.makingcontact.org which allows you to chat with other parents across the UK and the rest of the world by e-mail.
If you are a dad, check our dads' zone as well. It is written from your point of view, with tips from other fathers on how they have coped and plenty of links to other sites that might be of interest. In your area gives you details of support and information from Contact a Family in your part of the UK. Our offices are always pleased to hear from local parents and have lots of useful information about services and support in your part of the UK. You may also like to look at other parts of this website if you are interested in our campaigns and policy work, for example, or you want to know more about the development work that we are doing in our Parents and Paediatricians Together project. We also have a free monthly information bulletin by e-mail - why not sign up now? We also offer both practical and emotional support on a one-to-one basis, particularly to families who have reached a point of crisis, such as receiving a diagnosis for the first time, or their child moving to a new school. Our eight London borough-based projects provide long-term one-to-one support to families, including those with complex needs. A team of Family Workers based around the UK joined us from the Lady Hoare Trust. This Family Support Service provides one-to-one support to families in their own homes. If there are any questions that remain unanswered - do contact our helpline, freephone 0808 808 3555. We will do our best to help you find the answers you need. "I felt armed and ready to face the challenges my child gives me every day and how I could react to him decisively." |
